Hand of the Lord
Before Barry Allen. Before the Speed Force. Before DC Comics had a name for it, a prophet in robes and sandals was already running in it at speeds no chariot could match.
1 Kings 18:46 is one of the most electrifying moments in all of Scripture. After calling down fire from heaven on Mount Carmel, Elijah tucks his cloak into his belt and outruns King Ahab’s chariot to Jezreel—miles of open terrain—on foot. The text doesn’t offer an explanation. It doesn’t need one. The Hand of the LORD came upon him. That’s all it says. That’s all it needed to say.
Decades later, DC Comics would build an entire mythology trying to describe what that kind of power looks like. They called it the Speed Force — an extradimensional energy field that grants its users superhuman velocity, lightning generation, and momentum beyond physical limits. It’s one of the most compelling concepts in comic book history.
Elijah wasn’t impressed. He’d been running in the real thing since 850 BC.
